The word is actually ‘crochet’. Croquet is a sport played with a mallet and coloured hoops.
There are a few specialist magazines on the subject. A variation of crochet is macrame, another one you might try. My mother was quite good at crochet and I still have some samples of her handiwork in the house.

also being a beginner I suggest you start with a basic chain stitch.
you can find out how to chrochet all over the net.
1. learn basic chain stitch
2. learn single crochet
3. learn double crochet
4. learn triple crochet
5. learn half treble crochet
you will be able to make most anything
learn the stitches first.
learn the different stitches for knitting as well.
then you can make something from a pattern.
