What is the difference between microwave popcorn & self popped popcorn?

By Sydney

Does anyone know what the difference between microwave popcorn & self popped popcorn? I mean the actual popcorn itself. Is it grown differently or something? Can you pop regular popcorn in a microwave?

No, its not grown differently. The difference is microwave popcorn has a lot more chemicals in it (that ‘butter’ flavouring). Also when you cook microwave or self popped the consistency and taste is different. Microwave popcorn is a lot more airy whereas self popped is a little more dense. The flavour for self popped is also better, tasting a lot like movie theatre popcorn. It’s also a lot cheaper and better for you if you make it yourself

Firstly, look at the ingredients list for microwave popcorn. It contains oil and flavourings.

Secondly, the design of a microwave popcorn bag is important. They contain something that heats up in the microwave, that then heats the oil and popcorn so that all the kernels pop nicely in the oil. If you put popcorn just in a normal paperbag, you’ll end up with lots of the kernels not popped and some of them burnt.

You can pop normal popcorn with a little oil in a pan with a lid on the hob (stovetop). Or with a popcorn maker, which I still think is the best and most healthy way to go: it doesn’t need any oil because it uses hot air.
