How do I shoot a glamor photo with just a disco ball for light?

By Sydney

How do I find the parallel light beam lamp for the disco ball? How powerful must it be?

The easiest way to get this kind of effect is to fake it with a gobo. That’s a template placed in front of a studio light to create a patterned lighting effect. You can’t light with just a disco ball, in any case – you will need to have some fill light.

I wiould extend Injanier answer a bit.

You would generally light the subject first to get the modelling (form definition, shadowing) that you want for the poses and then you can add a Gobo as Injanier said, or you can go to a Home Depot (or other building supply) and get a few mirrored tiles. Break them and glue them on to a board. Bounce your effects light off that and on to the subject. Injanier called the extra lighting fill, but it is better to think in terms of creating a basic exposure that you add effects to.

You will have to watch out that the effects light doesn’t expose the areas that it lights. The general lighting and the effects lighting are additive.

Just a disco ball without ambient or other lighting doesn’t work very well aesthetically.
